University House repairs finally underway …

University House, the heritage-listed heart of campus, was closed after severe damage in the hailstorm of January 2020. The scale of the damage, age of the building, and its national heritage status meant a long period of investigation, planning and negotiation before repair and improvement work could begin. The first phase, involving replacement of 70,000 bespoke roof tiles and copper roofing across the whole building, is now underway, under the watchful guidance of the University’s consulting heritage architects. The second phase, of repairs and improvements to the fabric and infrastructure of the building, will begin around October. It will include converting University House to Below Zero operations.

University House is expected to reopen late 2025 (date tbc), looking even more splendid than the 1954 original; we’ll keep you updated. In the meantime. University House events continue at Rimmer St, and the new Symposium wine bar will be opening in Kambri.
