Two of Australia’s most experienced foreign policy makers will cover Australia’s place in the world from their highly informed perspectives and experience.

Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC has been Chancellor of ANU since January 2010 after heading up the International Crisis Group and 13 years as a Federal Cabinet Minister, including eight years as Australian Foreign Minister.

He has written or edited 12 books including Cooperating for Peace: The Global Agenda for the 1990s, Australia’s Foreign Relations, The Responsibility to Protect: Ending Mass Atrocity Crimes Once and for All, Inside the Hawke-Keating Government: A Cabinet Diary and Nuclear Weapons: The State of Play 2015. He has published over 100 chapters in books and journal articles (and many more newspaper and magazine articles) on foreign relations, politics, human rights and legal reform.

Hugh White studied philosophy at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford before embarking on a diverse career as a journalist, intelligence analyst, adviser to the Prime Minister and Minister for Defence and Deputy Secretary for Strategy and Intelligence in the Department of Defence.

He was the principal author of the 2000 Defence White Paper and has also written The China Choice: Why America Should Share Power and Beyond the Defence of Australia.
